Digital Media Repository provides online access to Muncie City Directories (1876-1922)

Now available in the Digital Media Repository is the Muncie City Directories digital collection! This digital collection provides access to 13 full-text searchable volumes of city and rural route directories ranging from 1876-1922.

Full-text searching provides researchers with an opportunity to search a name, business or street and compare that search to every word within the document. Researchers will now be able to find a word or phrase (e.g. Ball, George, Patterson Block, Walnut Street) anywhere within the document, as opposed to searching a set of keywords (e.g. index, alphabetic listing).

City directories in this collection are subdivided into four categories:
  • Alphabetical listing
  • Street listing
  • Numerical telephone listing
  • Classified buyers' guide
The alphabetical listing features individuals who lived in Muncie, Indiana. The street listing features streets where people and businesses were located. The numerical telephone listing functions exactly as our present day telephone directory. The classified buyers' guide lists all types of businesses as well as professions, clubs, societies, associations, hospitals, cemeteries, labor organizations, libraries, parks, playgrounds, and schools. This category acts as the only complete business classification guide in Muncie, Indiana for these dates. Also included within city directories are advertisements for businesses. These advertisements can be found within the beginning of the city directory as well as throughout the alphabetical listing and classified buyers' guide.

A collection of Muncie city directories from 1923 to present can be found in the Archives and Special Collections reading room. For more information, please contact Archives and Special Collections at or 765-285-5078.
