New Exhibit: Shirrel Rhoades Photograph Collection

The University Libraries' Archives and Special Collections invites you to view an exhibit of the Shirrel Rhoades Photograph Collection beginning on Monday, October 18, 2010, on the second floor of the Alexander M. Bracken Library. The collection features the works of more than 50 world-renowned photographers, including Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams, Cecil Beaton, Herb Ritts, Jerry Uelsman, and David Vestal.

Shirrel Rhoades is a writer, publisher, teacher, and avid collector. He has written and worked for publications such as Sunday Magazine, Readers Digest, Harper`s Magazine, Scholastic, Ladies Home Journal, Sport, Redbook, and Marvel Comics. His books include Magazines: A Complete Guide to the Industry (2006), Comic Books: How the Industry Works (2007), and A Complete History of American Comic Books (2008).

A life-long lover of photography, Rhoades started collecting by trading photographs with Larry Colwell, a photographer who was a part of the Edward Weston f/64 group in the 20th century on the West coast. Commenting on his photograph collection, Rhoades said, "When I decided that I could not devote myself to photography, I chose to appreciate the work of those who had; collecting photographs that I wish I had taken."

The collection will be on exhibit through December 31, 2010. For more information, contact Bethany Fiechter at
