College of Architecture and Planning and the University Libraries Collaborate on the Drawings and Documents Archive

The College of Architecture and Planning’s (CAP) Drawings and Documents Archive was founded by Professor Andrew R. Seager in the 1970s. Andy retired in 2008 after serving the College of Architecture and Planning for 40 years. On May 27, 2009 he will receive the Dick Green Memorial Historic Preservation Award from the Muncie Historic Preservation and Rehabilitation Commission for his work in creating and growing the Drawings and Documents Archive.

Under Andy’s stewardship, the Drawings and Documents Archive grew to house more than 100,000 items, with a focus on drawings and renderings by practitioners throughout Indiana from the late 19th century to the present. Materials in the collection include working drawings, presentation drawings, construction documents, architects’ letters, business records, photographs, and models from over 40 firms and agencies. Andy retired in 2008, leaving a void in the archives for students and faculty at CAP conducting historical research.

In an effort to maintain the archive within CAP and to harness the technical and archival expertise of the University Libraries, CAP and the Libraries reached an agreement to propel the Drawings and Documents Archive into its next phase of development.

A major part of that agreement was for the University Libraries to hire a full-time archivist, and at the beginning of April, 2009, Carol A. Street began her responsibilities as Archivist for Architectural Records in the University Libraries. A major objective for her is to identify signature collections within the archive for digitization to facilitate research, learning, and teaching for CAP’s students and faculty, and scholars around the world.

Carol has a master’s degree in library science from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), as well as extensive library and curatorial experience working in art and design museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography both of which are in New York City, the San Jose Museum of Art, and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art (Indianapolis).

Working under the direction of John B. Straw, Assistant Dean for Digital Initiatives and Special Collections, and with advice from the faculty and administration at CAP, Carol will continue the important legacy of the Drawings and Documents Archive as well as seeking ways to expand the collections and services offered to students, faculty, alumni, and other researchers.
